My Oyster Mushroom Journey
In 2013, I was lucky enough to intern at Growing Power, a nonprofit urban farm in Milwaukee (unfortunately the farm has since closed). There, I learned how to cultivate oyster mushrooms, from inoculation to harvest. I did not have any history of mushroom cultivation before my internship, and I found the entire process to be fascinating. Plus, the result was delicious mushrooms! I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to work and learn at Growing Power.
Since the conclusion of my Growing Power internship, I continued to experiment with growing oyster mushrooms over the years. There is something magical about the process that brings me back to this hobby repeatedly.
Ten years later and I am still as captivated as ever with mushrooms. In 2023, I plan to expand my mushroom oyster cultivation journey, and will use this website to share the process. My goals are to evaluate different substrates from the local waste stream, provide opportunities for the community to learn about growing oyster mushrooms, and create healthy soil from the spent substrate. I hope you enjoy following along on my journey, and do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.
